The core content components of the two hundred hours of curriculum recommended in the Formation Guidelines: Recommendations to Foster, Support, and Recognise the Formation of Spiritual Directors in Australia are the categories that index the following spiritual direction biography. The categories are as follows:

1.      Scripture and theology, in accord with the program’s religious tradition;

2.      the psycho-spiritual development of the human person;

3.      the nature of religious experience, the discernment of spirits, and ways of prayer;

4.      issues related to social justice;

5.      the different theories and praxis of spiritual direction and psychological counselling;

6.      the practice of professional referral;

7.      the ethics of spiritual direction practice;

8.      supervision.
